The Question Every New Hobbyist Asks
You're at the fish shop. There's a tank of neon tetras on your left. A row of bettas in cups on your right. Guppies in one corner, a magnificent oscar in another, a group of corydoras bumbling along the bottom of a display tank in the middle. All of them are beautiful. All of them are freshwater fish. Can they live together?
The answer, like most things worth knowing in the aquarium hobby, is: it depends. And the "it depends" has a framework behind it that, once you understand it, makes every future stocking decision straightforward.
Fish compatibility isn't random. It isn't luck. It isn't even particularly complex once you know what variables to look at. The same four questions apply to every species combination you'll ever consider, and if the answers line up, the combination works. If they don't, it won't, regardless of how good your intentions are or how carefully you manage the tank.
The consequences of getting it wrong matter. Fish that are incompatible don't just ignore each other; they stress, injure, or even eat each other. Chronic stress suppresses immune function, makes fish more susceptible to disease, and shortens lifespans. In a community tank, the wrong combination doesn't just harm the incompatible species; it destabilises the whole tank.
Getting it right, on the other hand, produces something genuinely beautiful: a tank with multiple species occupying different zones, displaying natural behaviour, and creating the kind of living, layered ecosystem that makes people stop walking past your tank and stand in front of it.

The Four Compatibility Pillars: How to Evaluate Any Combination
Every species combination you consider should be evaluated against four pillars. Think of them as four filters a combination has to pass; all four have to work in the long term.
Pillar 1: Water Parameters
Fish evolved in specific water chemistry conditions: temperature, pH, and hardness, and while most aquarium species tolerate a reasonable range around their ideal, there are combinations where the requirements don't overlap enough to find a shared middle ground.
Temperature is the most immediately critical parameter. Tropical fish like neon tetras, guppies, and corydoras need 24–28°C. Goldfish are cold-water fish that do best at 15–22°C. You cannot house both together; the temperature that keeps goldfish healthy stresses tropical fish, and the temperature that keeps tropical fish healthy compromises goldfish health and lifespan. This particular combination is one of the most common mistakes in Indian aquariums, typically because both species are widely available and inexpensive.
pH matters more for sensitive species than hardy ones. Most community fish: tetras, rasboras, guppies, corydoras, do well across a pH range of 6.5–7.5, which covers most Indian municipal water sources. Amazonian species like discus and cardinal tetras prefer softer, more acidic water (pH 5.5–6.8). African cichlids from Lake Malawi and Tanganyika need hard, alkaline water (pH 7.8–8.5). These requirements don't overlap, and housing Amazonian and African species together means permanently compromising both.
Hardness follows a similar pattern. Indian tap water in most cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai tends to be medium-hard to hard. This suits livebearers (guppies, platies, mollies), African cichlids, and goldfish very well. It's less ideal for Amazonian softwater species but manageable for hardier tetras and corydoras. Fish temperament falls into a rough spectrum from completely peaceful to highly aggressive, with several meaningful gradations between:

Semi-aggressive fish: many barbs (particularly tiger barbs), some larger danios, and mollies in certain conditions are peaceful in the right group size and tank setup but can become fin-nippers or aggressive toward smaller, slower-moving species.
Territorial fish: most cichlids, particularly during breeding, establish and defend territories aggressively. This doesn't mean they can't be in a community, but it requires enough space for territories to exist without constant overlap.
Predatory fish: oscars, flowerhorns, larger cichlids, and arowana will eat any fish small enough to fit in their mouth. This isn't aggression in the conventional sense; it's feeding behaviour. The compatibility rule here is simple: any fish that can fit in a predator's mouth will eventually end up there.
Aggressive-to-own-species fish: male bettas are the most obvious example, but many cichlid species fall into this category. A male betta in a community of peaceful tetras and corydoras is typically fine. Two male bettas in any tank, regardless of size, will fight.
Practical rule: Match temperament levels. Peaceful with peaceful. Semi-aggressive with species that can hold their own. Never mix predators with prey-sized fish, and never expect a calm species to hold its ground against an aggressive one just because the tank is large.
Pillar 3: Size and Predation
Related to temperament but distinct, a size differential creates predation risk even between species that aren't conventionally "aggressive."
A fully grown angelfish at 15cm is not aggressive. It also cannot resist eating a 2cm neon tetra, because the neon tetra is exactly the size of natural angelfish prey. This is an extremely common and completely avoidable loss in Indian tanks: hobbyists who have read that angelfish are peaceful add them to a neon tetra community, and the tetras begin disappearing overnight.
The rule of thumb: don't mix species where the adult size differential exceeds a ratio of approximately 3:1 unless the smaller species is specifically non-prey (like a corydoras, whose armoured body and bottom-dwelling behaviour make it an unappealing target for most fish). A 5cm tetra with a 15cm fish is borderline. A 2cm shrimp with a 12cm fish is a snack.
This rule applies differently for bottom dwellers: corydoras, plecos, loaches, which are typically safe with much larger fish because their body shape, armour, and substrate-hugging behaviour means larger fish rarely perceive them as prey.
Pillar 4: Swimming Zone and Territory
A well-stocked community tank uses every level of the water column: surface, mid-water, and bottom. Fish that occupy the same zone can sometimes conflict over territory, feeding space, or dominance even between peaceful species.
Surface zone: Bettas, gouramis, hatchetfish, livebearers. Note that bettas and gouramis are both labyrinth fish that surface-breathe and can become territorial with each other, particularly in smaller tanks.
Mid-water zone: Most tetras, rasboras, barbs, danios. These are the schooling fish that drive the main visual movement of a community tank. Multiple mid-water species work well together provided temperaments align.
Bottom zone: Corydoras, loaches, plecos, most catfish. Multiple bottom-dwelling species generally coexist peacefully; corydoras and bristlenose plecos, for example, occupy the same zone but use it differently and rarely conflict.
The zoning strategy: A tank that deliberately stocks one or two surface species per zone, one or two mid-water schooling species, and one bottom species creates a visually balanced, behaviourally stable community where competition is minimised, and natural behaviour is maximised.

Combinations That Work
The Classic Indian Community (60–100L): Guppies or platies + harlequin rasboras + corydoras + bristlenose pleco. All peaceful, all different zones, overlapping water parameters, widely available in India.
The Planted Nano Community (40–60L): Neon or cardinal tetras + harlequin rasboras + corydoras + cherry shrimp + nerite snails. Soft water preference, peaceful throughout, biological cleanup crew included.
The Active Mid-Water Tank (80–120L): Tiger barbs (group of 8+, reduces fin-nipping) + zebra danios + corydoras + bristlenose pleco. Semi-aggressive kept in check by group size, active and visually dynamic.
The Cichlid Display (150L+): Peacock cichlids (multiple male colour variants) + yellow lab cichlids + synodontis catfish. All African, all alkaline water, all share compatible aggression levels.
Combinations That Don't Work
Goldfish + Tropical fish: Temperature incompatibility. Non-negotiable.
Betta + Guppy (male): Male guppies' fan tails trigger betta aggression. Betta will attack and kill male guppies. Female guppies are sometimes fine, but the risk remains.
Angelfish + Neon Tetras: Size predation. Neons are natural angelfish prey. They will be eaten.
Oscar + Any small fish: Predation. Anything that fits in an oscar's mouth will eventually end up there.
Tiger Barbs + Bettas or Angelfish: Tiger barbs are compulsive fin-nippers. Long-finned, slow-moving species like bettas and angelfish will be harassed continuously.
African Cichlids + South American species: pH and hardness incompatibility. African cichlids need hard, alkaline water; most South American species prefer soft, acidic conditions. Finding a true middle ground is nearly impossible.
Setting Up and Maintaining a Mixed Community
Understanding compatibility is the first step. The second is setting up and maintaining a mixed community tank in a way that keeps every species in it healthy, including during the parts of the Indian calendar year that most stress community tanks.
Stocking Order Matters
In a mixed community, the order in which species are introduced affects how territory is established and how aggression develops. A general rule:
Add peaceful, smaller species first. Tetras, rasboras, and corydoras let them establish as the dominant presence in the tank. When larger or more assertive species are added later, they enter a tank with an established community rather than an empty one they can claim entirely.
Add the most assertive species last. If you're adding a dwarf gourami, a single cichlid, or a semi-aggressive species, introducing them into an already-established community of smaller fish gives the smaller fish territorial familiarity that partially offsets the size disadvantage.

Feeding a Mixed Community
Different species have different nutritional requirements, and in a mixed community, feeding needs to reach every species, not just the fastest, most aggressive eaters at the surface.
