The reason cloudy water is so often mishandled is that cloudiness isn't a single problem. It's a symptom with several completely different causes, and the right fix for one cause is the wrong fix for another. A hobbyist who treats bacterial bloom cloudiness with a water clarifier has done nothing about the biology driving it. Direct sunlight hitting the tank is the most common trigger; even indirect sunlight through a nearby window can drive green water in a tank that's already nutrient-rich. Many hobbyists deliberately maintain "blackwater" tinted tanks for species like bettas, cardinal tetras, and discus.
What to do if you want to remove it:
- Pre-soak driftwood before adding it to the tank; boiling or soaking in a bucket with multiple water changes over several days significantly reduces tannin leaching.
