How to Know When Your Cycle Is Done And What to Do Next: Part 4 of the Nitrogen Cycle series

Zero ammonia. Zero nitrite. Detectable nitrate. All three confirmed simultaneously; that's a completed cycle. But confirmation is just the start: gradual stocking, weekly water changes, and Sunken Garden Good Bacteria dosed after every change protect the biological stability you spent weeks building. This is the final part of our 4-part Cycling Series, covering cycle confirmation, the 24-hour challenge, post-cycle maintenance, and protecting your biological filter through the Indian monsoon.

In Part 1, we covered what cycling is and why it matters. In Part 2, we walked through all three cycling methods. In Part 3, we went deep on Sunken Garden Good Bacteria: how it works, how to dose it, and the mistakes that undo the biology.

This is the final part and in many ways the most important one. Because knowing how to cycle a tank is only half the picture. Knowing with certainty that the cycle is actually complete before you add fish is what separates a successful setup from one that ends in preventable losses.

We'll also cover what changes in your maintenance routine after cycling, and how to protect the biological stability you've spent weeks building.


The Question You Cannot Answer Visually

The most dangerous moment in the cycling process is when the tank looks beautiful, the water is crystal clear, the equipment is running perfectly, and the hobbyist assumes the cycle is complete.

It may be. It may not be. Visual judgment cannot tell you which.

Ammonia and nitrite are both colourless. A tank in the final days of cycling, where nitrite is still elevated at a level that would stress or kill fish, looks identical to a tank where the cycle is complete, and the water is genuinely safe. There is no visual shortcut. The only way to confirm a completed cycle is to test the water.

This is not an optional step. It is the step that determines whether your fish live or die in the first weeks after stocking.


The Three-Parameter Test: What You're Looking For

A cycle is confirmed complete when all three of the following are true simultaneously, on the same test:

Ammonia: 0 ppm. No detectable ammonia in the water. The Nitrosomonas colony is large and active enough to convert ammonia to nitrite as fast as it's being produced.

Nitrite: 0 ppm. No detectable nitrite. This is typically the last parameter to reach zero. Nitrobacter bacteria establish more slowly than Nitrosomonas, and the nitrite spike can persist for one to two weeks after the ammonia spike has already resolved. A zero nitrite value is confirmation that Stage 2 of the cycle is fully established.

Nitrate: detectable above 0 ppm. The presence of nitrate in the water confirms that both stages of the nitrogen cycle are actively running; ammonia is being converted to nitrite, and nitrite to nitrate. If ammonia and nitrite are both zero but nitrate is also zero, the cycle is likely incomplete, or your test is giving a false reading.

All three conditions must be met simultaneously. Ammonia at zero and nitrite still climbing means the cycle is not done. Ammonia and nitrite both declining but not yet at zero means the cycle is not done. Wait. Test again in two days.

The Nitrogen Cycle Completion Test

The 24-Hour Ammonia Challenge

Confirming zero ammonia on a single test is necessary but not sufficient, especially if you've been doing fishless cycling. It's possible for ammonia to briefly read zero without the colony being large enough to handle the ongoing waste load of a fully stocked tank.

The 24-hour challenge verifies that the colony is not just functional but robust enough for actual stocking:

Step 1: Once you see ammonia at 0 ppm and nitrite at 0 ppm for two consecutive tests, add a final dose of your ammonia source, the same amount you've been using throughout the fishless cycling process.

Step 2: Test again 24 hours later. If ammonia has returned to 0 ppm within 24 hours, the colony is processing ammonia fast enough to handle a comparable fish load. The cycle is genuinely ready.

Step 3: If ammonia is still detectable after 24 hours, the colony needs more time. Continue dosing Good Bacteria daily, continue your ammonia source, and retest in another three to four days before trying the challenge again.

This one extra step saves you from discovering that your "cycled" tank isn't quite ready once the fish are already in it.


Testing Tools: What to Use and When

The TCWS Water Test Strips give you a 6-parameter reading: nitrate, nitrite, hardness, chlorine, pH, and carbonate, in under a minute. For most hobbyists, this is the practical testing solution throughout the cycling process: fast, accessible, and providing the key parameters (nitrite, nitrate) that show where the cycle stands.

For greater precision with ammonia specifically, particularly during fish-in cycling where the difference between 0.25 ppm and 0.5 ppm matters for fish safety, a liquid drop test kit (API Freshwater Master Test Kit or equivalent) provides more accurate low-range ammonia and nitrite readings than test strips. Worth having on hand for the cycling period.

Testing frequency during cycling:

  • Fishless cycling: every two to three days
  • Fish-in cycling: every single day; fish safety depends on knowing the numbers before they reach dangerous levels

Testing frequency after cycling:

  • First four weeks post-stocking: weekly
  • Established tank: monthly, or any time fish show signs of stress

The Water Change Before Stocking

Once the cycle is confirmed complete by the three-parameter test and the 24-hour challenge, do a 50% water change before adding any fish.

Why? During cycling, particularly fishless cycling, nitrate has been accumulating in the tank for several weeks. While nitrate is far less toxic than ammonia or nitrite, starting fish in water with elevated nitrate is an unnecessary stressor. A 50% water change with Sunken Garden Anti-Chlorine-treated water dilutes the accumulated nitrate and gives your fish the cleanest possible start in their new home.

Use Sunken Garden Anti-Chlorine for this pre-stocking water change and for every water change afterwards. Adding Fish: The Gradual Stocking Rule

The bacterial colony that forms during cycling is sized to process the ammonia load present during the cycle. If the ammonia source during cycling was a small prawn or a pinch of food, the colony is calibrated to that level of ammonia input. Add a full tank of fish on day one after cycling, and you introduce an ammonia load the colony isn't yet large enough to handle, triggering a secondary ammonia spike in what appeared to be a cycled tank.

The solution is gradual stocking, and it's not optional; it's a biological necessity.

Week 1 post-cycle: Add one-third of your planned total fish stock. These fish provide the ammonia load that begins growing the colony to match a larger population.

Week 3: Test ammonia and nitrite. If both read 0 ppm, add the second third of your planned stock.

Week 5: Test again. If both read 0 ppm, add the remaining fish to complete your planned stock.

Dose Sunken Garden Good Bacteria after every water change throughout this gradual stocking period. Each stocking addition is a step-up in ammonia load. Good Bacteria supports the colony's growth to meet each new level, reducing the risk of a temporary spike between stocking stages.


Your Post-Cycle Maintenance Routine

Once the cycle is established and stocking is complete, your ongoing maintenance routine looks like this:

Weekly water changes of 20–30% of tank volume. This is the most important ongoing task. Nitrate accumulates continuously and must be diluted through regular partial water changes. Skipping water changes in an established tank is one of the fastest routes to deteriorating water quality. Weekly, 20–30%.

Sunken Garden Anti Chlorine at every water change. Every water change, without exception, for the life of the tank. Untreated tap water contains chlorine that partially damages the bacterial colony with each change. Anti Chlorine protects the colony while simultaneously replenishing it with bacterial strains.

Sunken Garden Good Bacteria after every water change. Continue dosing throughout the life of the tank and not just during cycling. Water changes remove a portion of free-floating bacteria from the water column, and regular re-seeding keeps the colony consistently supported. This is particularly important after any disruption: power cuts, medication courses, filter cleaning, illness outbreaks, as we covered in The Invisible Hero of Monsoon Season.

Never clean all filter media at once. Your filter media is where the bacterial colony lives. Cleaning all of it simultaneously, even in tank water, removes too much of the colony. Clean mechanical media (pads, sponge pre-filters) regularly. Clean biological media (ceramic rings, porous stone) only when flow is genuinely compromised, and never more than one-third of the bio-media at a time.

Test monthly in an established tank. Monthly testing of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH in a stable, established tank gives you a baseline reading to compare against. If parameters drift from their established baseline even in a tank that appears healthy, testing gives you a warning before fish show visible symptoms.

The Post-Cycle Maintenance Calendar

Protecting the Cycle Through Monsoon

For Indian hobbyists, there's one more layer to maintaining biological stability after cycling: monsoon season.

As we covered throughout our Monsoon Water Series and the Sunken Garden Good Bacteria guide, the bacterial colony faces its most demanding four months of the year from June to September:

  • Chlorine spikes in tap water damage the colony at every water change
  • Power cuts interrupt oxygen flow to filter media, causing bacterial die-off
  • Temperature fluctuations reduce bacterial processing efficiency
  • Increased ammonia load from stressed fish puts extra demand on the colony

The post-cycle routine above handles the first concern: anti-Chlorine at every water change. For power cuts, dose Good Bacteria immediately when power returns and directly into the filter intake. For temperature stability, a heater set to 26–27°C, as we covered in our heater guide, keeps the bacterial colony's metabolic efficiency even as ambient room temperature fluctuates.

A tank whose cycle was carefully established, with Good Bacteria dosed consistently from day one, enters monsoon with a more robust, more diverse, and more resilient bacterial colony than a tank that was cycled naturally without support. That resilience is exactly what monsoon demands.


Bringing the Series Together

Across four parts, here's what we've established:

Part 1: Cycling establishes the nitrogen cycle, a two-stage bacterial process that converts toxic ammonia and nitrite into controllable nitrate. Every new tank must cycle before fish go in. New Tank Syndrome is entirely predictable and entirely preventable.

Part 2: Three cycling methods: fishless (recommended, no fish at risk), fish-in (when fish are already present, requires daily management), and seeded (fastest, requires access to established media). Each has different timelines and requirements.

Part 3: Sunken Garden Good Bacteria contains denitrifying bacterial strains that complete the nitrogen cycle all the way to harmless nitrogen gas. Dosed from day one, it shortens the cycling timeline from 4–6 weeks to 2–3 weeks across all three methods. Six common mistakes can restart the cycle from near-zero; know them and avoid them.

Part 4: Cycle completion requires three confirmed parameters: zero ammonia, zero nitrite, detectable nitrate, verified by the 24-hour challenge.
