What Sunken Garden Good Bacteria Actually Contains
Sunken Garden Good Bacteria is a liquid microbial supplement containing concentrated, live denitrifying bacterial strains in a stable suspension.
The critical word is denitrifying, and this is what separates it from most bacterial products available in India.
Most bottled bacteria products contain nitrifying bacteria only, specifically species that convert ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate. These are Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter, the two bacterial populations that run the standard nitrogen cycle. Natural cycling relies on the right bacteria arriving in your tank from the environment. In a new, sterile aquarium, the starting population of these bacteria is essentially zero. They arrive slowly from the air, from tap water, from any surfaces the water contacts and must then find and colonise the filter media before they can begin multiplying in meaningful numbers.
This process is slow by nature. The bacteria that drive the nitrogen cycle have longer generation times than many other microorganisms. Nitrosomonas can take 7–10 hours to reproduce under optimal conditions. Building a colony large enough to process the ammonia load of a stocked tank from a starting population of near-zero takes weeks.
Sunken Garden Good Bacteria shortens this process by eliminating the arrival stage. Rather than waiting for bacteria to find the tank, you introduce a concentrated, active population directly into the filter media on day one. How to Use Good Bacteria: The Complete Dosing Protocol
During Fishless Cycling

Days 2–7: Dose 1ml per 10 litres daily. The first week is the critical bacterial establishment window; daily dosing continuously reinforces the developing colony as it begins colonising filter surfaces and multiplying.
Week 2 onwards: Dose after every water change. Water changes remove a small portion of free-floating bacteria from the water column. Re-seeding after each change keeps supporting the population as the colony matures.
At cycle completion: Continue dosing after every water change as part of your standard ongoing maintenance routine. This is not a product you use only during cycling; it's a product you use throughout the life of the tank to maintain biological stability.
During Fish-In Cycling
Day 1 (Fish arrive): Dose immediately- 1ml per 10 litres. Don't wait a day or two to see how the fish settle. The bacteria need to begin establishing the moment the fish start producing ammonia.
Daily throughout cycling: 1ml per 10 litres, every day, until both ammonia and nitrite consistently read 0 ppm. During fish-in cycling, the urgency is higher because fish are exposed to ammonia and nitrite throughout the process, and the faster the colony establishes, the shorter that exposure window.

What Good Bacteria Cannot Do
Being honest about what a product can't do is as important as explaining what it can. Here's where Good Bacteria's role has limits:
It cannot replace the wait entirely. The cycling process requires bacterial multiplication to sufficient colony density, and that takes biological time regardless of starting population. Good Bacteria shortens the timeline meaningfully (2–3 weeks instead of 4–6), but it does not cycle a tank overnight or eliminate the need to test before adding fish.
It cannot protect fish from ammonia in an overloaded tank. If a fish-in cycling tank is heavily overstocked, or if feeding continues at full rate during cycling, the ammonia load may exceed what even a Good Bacteria-supported colony can process fast enough. Reduce fish numbers if possible and underfeed throughout cycling.
It cannot substitute for water changes during fish-in cycling. If ammonia or nitrite climbs to dangerous levels in a fish-in cycling tank, the correct response is a partial water change, not a larger dose of Good Bacteria. Good Bacteria accelerates the biological solution; water changes address the immediate chemical threat.
It cannot fix other water quality problems. Good Bacteria addresses biological stability in the nitrogen cycle. It doesn't address pH issues, chlorine exposure, heavy metal contamination, or disease. The Six Cycling Mistakes That Undo Everything
Even with Good Bacteria dosed correctly, certain mistakes can set the cycle back significantly or restart it from near-zero. These are the most common and most costly.
1. Adding fish before the cycle is confirmed complete. The most common mistake. The tank looks ready. The water is clear. Wait for the test results, not the visual. Zero ammonia, zero nitrite, detectable nitrate: all three confirmed before fish go in.
2. Cleaning the filter during cycling. The developing bacterial colony lives in the filter media. Cleaning it, rinsing, replacing, or washing the media removes the colony at its most vulnerable stage. The filter does not get cleaned until after the cycle is complete. Not during.
3. Using unconditioned tap water. Chlorine kills bacteria. Every water change during cycling with untreated tap water partially destroys the colony you're building. Always dose Sunken Garden Anti-Chlorine before adding any new water.
4. Large water changes during fishless cycling. Water changes dilute the ammonia that the developing colony needs as food. 5. Turning the filter off. Beneficial bacteria are aerobic. Without water flow carrying oxygen through the media, they begin dying within hours. The filter runs day and night continuously, throughout the entire cycling process and beyond.
6. Overstocking immediately after cycling. The bacterial colony that forms during cycling is sized to process the ammonia load present during the cycle. A sudden large increase in fish stock overwhelms it and can trigger a secondary ammonia spike in what appeared to be a fully cycled tank. Add fish gradually over several weeks after the cycle completes.
