The holiday is booked. The bags are packed. And then, three days before you leave, the thought arrives: what happens to the fish?
It's one of the most common questions in the aquarium hobby, one that generates more anxiety than it deserves and occasionally more complacency than it should. The honest answer is nuanced: most healthy adult fish can survive longer without food than most hobbyists assume. But "survive" and "thrive" are different standards, and the length of your absence, the species you keep, and the condition of your tank before you leave all determine which one your fish will experience.
Here's everything you need to know species by species, day by day.
The Biology of Fish Fasting
Fish are cold-blooded. Their metabolic rate is directly governed by water temperature, which means their energy requirements are fundamentally lower than those of warm-blooded animals of comparable size. A dog left without food for four days is in serious distress. A healthy tropical fish left without food for the same period is, in most cases, fine.
This isn't because fish are somehow more resilient than mammals in general; it's because their bodies don't expend energy maintaining a constant internal temperature. Every calorie a fish consumes goes toward growth, reproduction, and activity rather than thermoregulation. In the absence of food, that metabolic demand drops further as activity naturally decreases.
The practical implication: most healthy adult tropical fish can go without food for 3–7 days without any meaningful health impact. Some species of larger fish with slower metabolisms can comfortably fast for two weeks or more. Others, particularly fry, juveniles, and high-metabolism species, require food far more frequently and can begin to show health consequences within two to three days of fasting.
Species-by-Species: How Long Is Safe?
Guppies, platies, mollies, and other livebearers: 5–7 days without any impact. Hardy, adaptable, and will graze biofilm and algae from tank surfaces between feedings. A well-planted tank with established biofilm provides supplementary nutrition that extends this window further.
Tetras and rasboras: 5–7 days comfortably. Schooling fish with moderate metabolisms that handle short fasts well. Neon tetras are slightly more sensitive than hardier species like harlequin rasboras for trips approaching a week; a feeding solution is worth considering.
Corydoras and bottom dwellers: 5–7 days. Corydoras will actively forage the substrate for organic debris and biofilm throughout your absence, making them among the most self-sufficient fish during a short holiday.
Bettas: 5–10 days. Bettas are carnivores with a relatively slow metabolism compared to their size. A healthy, well-fed adult betta handles a week-long absence well. Beyond ten days, their energy reserves begin to deplete noticeably.
Goldfish: 8–14 days. Goldfish are remarkably resilient and have a slower, cold-water metabolism that allows extended fasting without consequence. A week's holiday poses essentially no risk to a healthy goldfish.
Cichlids (medium to large): 7–14 days. Larger fish have proportionally more stored energy reserves. Most medium cichlids handle a week's absence without issue; larger species can fast for two weeks or more.
Angelfish and discus: 3–5 days comfortably, up to 7 with caution. Both species have higher metabolisms than most community fish and are more sensitive to stress. Discus in particular, already a demanding species as we've noted in our CO2 Diffuser Series, should not be left without food for more than five days without a feeding arrangement.
Fry and juveniles: 1–2 days maximum. Young fish are growing rapidly and have minimal energy reserves. If you keep breeding tanks or have fry present, a trusted caretaker or an automatic feeder is non-negotiable for any absence ranging from 24–48 hours.
Shrimp and invertebrates: Shrimp are largely self-sufficient; they graze biofilm and algae continuously and can go without supplemental feeding for 2–3 weeks in an established planted tank. Mystery snails and nerite snails are similarly self-sufficient from natural tank algae and biofilm.
What Actually Goes Wrong When Fish Are Left Too Long
The risk of leaving fish without food isn't starvation in most cases; it's the cascade of secondary problems that an unfed, unmonitored tank can develop.
Aggression increases. Hungry fish, particularly cichlids, bettas, and dominant community fish, become more territorial and aggressive toward tankmates as food competition increases. Fish that coexisted peacefully may injure each other during a week-long absence.
Water quality degrades faster than expected. This is counterintuitive; you'd expect an unfed tank to have better water quality. But stressed, hungry fish produce more ammonia per unit of body weight, and any fish that dies during your absence (from aggression, disease, or pre-existing weakness you hadn't noticed) begins decomposing and crashing the water chemistry rapidly.
Disease takes hold more easily. Immune function in fish is directly linked to nutritional status. Fish that were already slightly stressed/slightly underfed before the holiday deteriorate faster without food than well-nourished, robust fish. A healthy tank before you leave is the single best protection against a crisis while you're away.
Algae blooms. Without the competition of regular feeding activity and the biological disruption of daily maintenance, algae can establish and bloom rapidly during an absence, particularly in tanks near windows or with inconsistent lighting timers.
Preparing the Tank Before You Leave
The best holiday preparation for an aquarium happens in the week before departure, not the day before.
Do a water change two to three days before leaving, not the day before. A water change the day before departure can temporarily disrupt water chemistry and biological stability at the worst possible moment. Two to three days gives the tank time to restabilise completely before you leave.
Dose Sunken Garden Good Bacteria after the pre-departure water change. A reinforced, well-maintained bacterial colony in the filter is your best insurance against the ammonia blips that an unfed, unmonitored tank can develop, particularly if a fish dies during your absence.
Check all equipment. Filter running, heater set and functioning, timer light. A filter or heater failure during a week-long absence, in a tank already under the stress of an unfed period, can be catastrophic. The day before departure is the right time to confirm everything is working, not to discover it isn't.
Treat the water with Sunken Garden Anti-Chlorine at the pre-departure water change. Clean, properly conditioned water entering the tank before you leave reduces the chemical load on the fish, and the filter manages it while you're away.
Remove any sick or weak fish to a quarantine tank or ask a trusted friend to monitor them. A fish that was borderline before you left is unlikely to improve in an unmonitored tank.
Your Options for Longer Absences
For trips beyond seven days, or for tanks with fry, discus, or other higher-need species, you have several practical options:
Ask a trusted friend or neighbour. The simplest solution but requires someone who won't overfeed. Overfeeding by a well-meaning caretaker is actually more dangerous than no feeding at all. Leave pre-portioned food in a clearly labelled container, with written instructions specifying exactly how much to feed and when.
Automatic feeders. Battery-powered devices that dispense a measured portion of dry food on a set schedule. Reliable for dry flake and pellet foods; not suitable for frozen or live food. Set up and test the feeder for several days before departure to confirm it's dispensing the right amount. Automatic feeders that jam or over-dispense while you're away can cause significant water quality problems.
Holiday/vacation fish food blocks. Slow-dissolving blocks of compressed food that fish graze on over several days. Widely available and convenient, but use with caution; they can dramatically spike ammonia and nitrate as they dissolve, particularly in smaller tanks. If using a block, choose a reputable brand, use a smaller block than you think you need, and test the water the first time before relying on it for a real holiday.
A professional aquarium sitter or fish shop. For high-value tanks, discus, rare cichlids, and breeding setups, some local fish shops offer tank-sitting services, or hobbyists provide this service within the Indian aquarium community.
What to Do When You Return
Coming home to find a dead fish, cloudy water, or stressed livestock is distressing, but the response matters as much as the initial situation.
Don't do a massive water change immediately. The instinct is to "fix" everything at once. A large, sudden water change in a stressed tank further disrupts the water chemistry. Do a normal 20–30% water change with properly conditioned water and Sunken Garden Anti-Chlorine, and let the tank restabilise.
Remove any dead fish immediately. A decomposing fish releases ammonia rapidly. Remove it as soon as you spot it.
Dose Sunken Garden Good Bacteria. After any absence, particularly where the tank was unmonitored and possibly stressed, re-seeding the bacterial colony supports rapid recovery of biological stability.
Resume normal feeding gradually. After an extended fast, fish should be reintroduced to food slowly, a slightly smaller portion than normal for the first two or three days. Their digestive systems have been at rest, and overfeeding immediately after a fast can cause digestive stress.

The variables that turn a routine holiday into a fish emergency are almost always pre-existing: a filter already struggling, water quality already borderline, a fish already weakened. A tank in good condition before you leave will be in good condition when you return.
Prepare the week before. Check the equipment the day before. Leave clear instructions if someone is feeding. And come home to a tank that missed you but managed just fine without you.
